The Australian Capital Territory (ACT), previously the Federal Capital Territory until 1938, is a federal territory of Australia, centered around Canberra, the nation’s capital. Established after Federation to serve as the government’s seat, the ACT hosts key institutions and is entirely surrounded by New South Wales.

Federation occurred on January 1, 1901, leading to the cession of land at least 100 miles (160 km) from Sydney to the federal government. The Seat of Government Act 1908 designated the Yass-Canberra region as the capital, with the territory officially transferred from New South Wales in 1911 and Canberra founded in 1913.

While most residents live in Canberra, the ACT includes towns like Williamsdale and Tharwa, along with Namadgi National Park, which covers much of the area. Covering 2,280 km² (880 sq mi), the ACT is the smallest mainland territory, bordered by the Bombala railway line and various watersheds. In September 2022, it was announced that the border between New South Wales and the ACT would be modified for the first time since 1911, changing by 330 hectares (1.3 sq mi) in the Ginninderra watershed.
